Project "REACTIVATION", 2022

українська версія

The Reactivation multidisciplinary project takes place within the framework of #ZMINA_2_0 implemented by the IZOLYATSIA Foundation with the financial support of the European Union.

"Реактивація" - це мультидисциплінарний освітній проєкт, яки проходив у Львові 20.07.-10.10.2022.

Because of the war, many students remained in Lviv during the summer without the prospect of participating in educational or artistic projects. Some of our students lost the possibility to return home for the summer vacation (some lost their homes due to Russian aggression, or their hometowns are under occupation or shelling). "Reactivation" was a response to these challenges and an attempt to open up new opportunities and prospects for professional and creative development for students.
Over three months, a group of students of the Lviv National Academy of Arts (departments "Actual Art Practices" and "Monumental Painting"), the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts, the Mykola Lysenko Lviv Academy of Music, and the Kharkiv Music Academy, including forcibly displaced persons, attended master-classes, got acquainted with the local artistic environment, improved the ideas of artistic works. The group attended master classes and was introduced to artists and teachers Mykhailo Barabash, Roman Haideichuk, Kateryna Didyk, composer Ostap Manulyak, media artist Serhiy Petlyuk, and curator and art critic Daryna Skrynnyk-Myska.

Curators: Mykhailo Barabash, Roman Haideichuk, Ostap Manulyak

Master classes:

1. At the first master class, the participants of "Reactivation" prepared CVs and portfolios for participation in the art project. Artists at the beginning of their careers often feel confused when the list of exhibitions and residencies seems unconvincing. Mykhailo Barabash, a media artist and teacher of the Lviv Academy of Arts, shared his own experience.

2. How to talk about your artwork? How many philosophers do you have to quote for a good concept? Question marks and exclamation marks, pro et contra? Daryna Skrynnyk-Myska, curator and head of the Department of Contemporary Art Practices of the Lviv National Academy of Arts, gave a lecture on writing concepts for artistic works.

3. Together with media artist Serhiy Petlyuk, students learned about the peculiarities of working with media installations in space. Serhiy Petlyuk shared the secrets of technical and technological features of work in this genre, relying on his considerable experience.

4. Did you know that we look at images according to a certain scheme? Our gaze moves from the center of the composition to the upper right corner, then the lower left. Information, depending on the location on the poster, is perceived as more important, and memes are built according to this principle. The participants of the "Reactivation" project tried to convey the nature of the event in font and developed the design of the poster for the exhibition during the master class of the graphic designer and teacher of the Lviv Academy of Arts, Kateryna Didyk.

5. How to work in a shared space? How to create a joint concept of an exhibition where several artists participate? How to create a coherent narrative of the exposition with various artworks by different artists? The participants of the project learned about these and other issues related to the organization of a shared exhibition space during a master class under the guidance of the artist, curator, and teacher of the Department of Contemporary Art Practices of the Lviv National Academy of Arts Mykhailo Barabash.

As a result of the master class, the concept of the organization of the exhibition space for the "Reactivation" project was chosen in the Center of Architecture, Design, and Urbanism "Porokhova VEZHA".

6. How does the sound affect the audience's perception? How to create an environment that will strengthen the voice of the artist in his work? The participants of the "Reactivation" project learned about different strategies of working with sound in exhibition spaces at a lecture by Ostap Manulyak - composer, musicologist, assist.prof. of the Lviv Music Academy.

Exhibition "Reactivation" The multimedia exhibition at the Center for Architecture, Design, and Urbanism "Powder Tower" (September 27 - October 10, 2022) was the result of the artistic and educational project "Reactivation". During the exhibition, project participants tried themselves as mediators and talked about their works and themselves. Looking for points of contact between works and personal stories, young artists formulated one of the storylines of the exhibition as "a traumatic experience that united everyone." It's not just about living with loss, it's also about being able to see opportunities. This exhibition is not so much about trauma as about different experiences and the (impossibility) of considering them from a distance of today. After two months of interaction and building a small community, we realized that the plot of the exhibition could develop around a safe space, a buffer between war and peaceful life. This imagined safe space is like an ephemeral home to which you return in your imagination every day when it is impossible to do so physically. What is this buffer made of? From the network of connections between people, empathy, diaries, and fragments of everyday life that have acquired other valuable meanings. Opening of the exhibition
